International Family Orientation Program

The Family Orientation Program provides information and resources for parents of new students. Topics include housing & dining, academic advising & course selection, healthcare and health insurance, tuition and billing, career services & learning through experience, and MSU traditions & the global Spartan network. 


Welcome to the MSU Family! Michigan State University is committed to helping your student achieve their goals. We understand the important role you have played in preparing your student for their higher education. MSU recognizes the importance of family members, students, and the university working together to encourage your student’s success.

For these reasons, we invite you to participate in the Family Orientation Program. By preparing for and participating in the Family Orientation Program, our goal is that you will learn about the resources that will support their student’s transition to MSU, become more familiar with our campus, and begin to feel a sense of connection and community with MSU.

Summer 2021 New Student Orientation (NSO) Webinar Series


The Summer 2021 Webinar Series will take place virtually but synchronously throughout May, June, and July. We will offer webinars on various topics we know you and your student will be seeking information. We encourage you to watch them together, if possible! These webinars will be held at four different times, on week day and weekend days, in the hopes of finding a convenient time for you. We encourage incoming students, families and caregivers to watch these webinars together, if possible. These webinars will be recorded and transcribed a few business days after the live event. Transcripts will also be translated to Simplified Chinese and Spanish.

Summer/Fall 2021 Pre-Arrival Webinar Series 


The Summer/Fall 2021 Pre-Arrival Webinar series will take place virtually but synchronously throughout May, June, July, and August. To complement the Summer 2021 New Student Orientation (NSO) Webinar Series that will be offered to all incoming first-year undergraduate students and their families, the Office for International Students & Scholars is offering extended Pre-Arrival Webinars for the international population to provide you additional information that will be useful in this transition period. We encourage international students, families and caregivers to watch these webinars together, if possible. These webinars will be recorded.

2. Immigration Basics: Pre-Arrival Overview

3. Academic Transition and Student Success

In this session, presenters will discuss how academic resources across campus can help students get on the path to academic success. Presenters will share strategies on how to become better learners in both in-person and remote learning settings and provide students with ways to maximize their undergraduate experience at MSU.

4. US Healthcare and Health Insurance

5. Student Account and Paying Bills  

Date: Friday, June 18, 2021

Presenter(s): Student Account Services office, FlyWire  

In this session, presenters will discuss the student billing process, components of a student bill statement, payment options, and payment deadlines. Presenters will also provide an overview of how international payments can be made via FlyWire—the safest, most convenient way to make international payments to Michigan State University.

6. Student Involvement and International Student Panel

7. Cultural Adjustment, US and Classroom Cultures

In this session, participants will learn about the basics of cultural adjustmentgain foundational understanding about different aspects of US cultures, and identify tips to adjust to the US college classroom culture. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with presenters and ask questions towards the end of the webinar.

8. Prepare for Your Journey

In this session, participants will receive reminders on how to prepare for their journey to the US and to MSU. Presenters will provide an overview ohow to get to MSU upon student’s arrival to the US, move-in reminders, a brief introduction to transportation around the area, and a quick guide for shopping and groceries. Representative from MSUFCU will also provide a quick guide on how to open a US bank account and get an ATM card.

9. Immigration Basics: Maintaining Status

In this session, presenters will provide more in-depth information about the rules and regulations you need to know to maintain immigration status. Topics will include enrollment requirements, working in the USA, as well as a brief review of do’s and don'ts for entering the US.

Mandarin-speaking international students and families are welcomed to join WeChat groups set up specifically for the Class of 2025 international students and families.
